Many electric consumers in Maryland
can now choose their electric supplier. This is also known as electric deregulation or restructuring. Electric deregulation means that there will be more competitive prices and services available from more electric companies and these electric companies will compete to sell you electricity.
With more and more electric companies entering Maryland electric market, competition is stiff and prices are set to be highly competitive within the next few years; assuming energy resources remaining stable.
Some municipal electric systems and some rural cooperative systems are not participating in electric deregulation. These communities own non-profit systems or cooperatives which purchase wholesale energy and pass the savings (usually 10% - 15%) on to consumers at cost price.
